Things to do in Sydney in May

Head On Photo Festival - Across Sydney, Opens Friday, 1st May

"Head On is simply too big and too popular to be ignored. It attests to an overwhelming public interest in photography as the democratic art form of our age, and confirms Sydney’s status as the event capital of Australia"

The Head On Festival is the second biggest festival of its kind in the world. Most events are free and they take place all over Sydney. The festival’s Portrait Prize is Australia's major innovative showcase of portrait photography.

Tomahroma Food & Wine Festival - Blue Mountains - Saturday, 2nd May

The day after the Head On Festival opens you could visit the scenic Blue Mountains Botanic Garden. Enjoy the mountain air, great food, wine, music and take a few photos yourself. Watch out for the 'International' Back to Back Wool Challenge.

Running

May is the start of the running of the crowds with the Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon on Sunday, 17th May. You will race, jog, sweat and / or pant around some of Sydney's most attractive landmarks with a big finish in Hyde Park. The Manly Fun run takes place the following Sunday along (arguably) an even more scenic route.

Ruben Guthrie Sydney Film Festival

“By day, 29-year-old Ruben Guthrie is the wunderkind creative at one of Sydney’s hottest boutique ad agencies; by night, he is one of Sydney’s most notorious party boys until he jumps off a hotel roof into a wading pool and nearly kills himself.”
The film is called Ruben Guthrie and opens this year’s Sydney Film Festival. It is all about Sydney’s night life, the pubs, the bars and a quest not to frequent them.  A warts and all side to the ‘good life’. The City of Sydney gives an out of character dark and moody performance. Ruben Guthrie is a serious film with some fun moments to lighten the mood.
Aspire for 'big beautiful houses, great bodies and self-belief' but don't miss out on the 'real stuff'. And:
"People might look at their own families and how addiction has affected their own lives, and maybe take a little moment to consider the national pastime, which is getting smashed."
Can but drink to that.

Good Friday in Sydney

Good Friday in Sydney

Sydney lives! I can remember feeling stunned by how dead Sydney was on a Good Friday. Now I know better. Sydney doesn't die, but does tend to hide a little bit. You just need to know where to look:
